GenStat is already widely used by students, lecturers and teachers across many teaching and educational organisations. They choose GenStat because of the underpinning development philosophy of the software which is good statistical practice. We believe it is vital, particularly when just starting out in the world of statistics (or any data analyses), that the fundamental principles being taught are mirrored in the software being used.
But that is only half the story. When presented with statistics for the first time, or as an occasional user, the sometimes daunting array of terminology, procedures, tests and analyses can leave you stumped as to what to do next. This is where GenStat really comes into its own.
The easy to use menus backed up by expansive help, example analyses and online support resources mean that even the novice user can be up and running in minutes. The GenStat menus have a consistent; analyse - check assumptions - save details approach throughout to help you think logically and interactively about your data analysis - so you learn as you go.
Tracking your session is easy with the Audit Trail; a translation of your menu analysis into GenStat code. This can be really useful as you become more proficient in statistics, allowing you to understand and benefit from the powerful command language within GenStat.
The Save Session facility is particularly relevant as it means working with GenStat can be tailored around the teaching sessions; breaking the steps down to fit with the learning path. You can take a snapshot of your GenStat session at any time and restart it at a later date - with no need to work back through the analysis. Save Session records all the available data in GenStat at any given point, all open menus and their associated settings, all open spreadsheets and all open GenStat command programs.
The first step of any analysis should be the familiarization of your experimental data, to check that it has been carefully collected, or to graphically explore its nature. To achieve this, GenStat offers a range of tools for describing and visualizing data.
When using GenStat, you will be helped with dialogue boxes providing hints and alerts if the system thinks you may be trying to run inappropriate tests or analyses.
